morbid/mayhem

...a goodly pile up of rehearsal/demo/live swill by these frosty rockers from the far north...because of the different sources a different sound and vibe keeps settling and then disappearing leading the listener on a wandering/wondering path through desolate back alleys and filthy basements of low rent locales...incredible deep cavernous necro sound appears with the then unpatented buzzing treble guitar stun noise that swirls around like angry hornets from the darkest reaches of the overseeing subconscious...thudding drum that just won't stop beating the eternal rhythm for the faithful who voyage the at once joyous yet perilous highways of rocknroll...to put this into true perspective of how morbid carry yet mutate and push forward the universal vibe of rockiness, these cats could take this barrage of slop and gig the grande ballroom, detroit'68/ladbroke grove'70 and they'd buzz and wow the onlookers as authentic avantnoise rockers....some of these tracks show great promise of dark pummeling distorted psychedelia well away from trend consumers (underground or not) who usually wallow in the psych/goth happy patterns of cenury 21 cultural endeavours...

...a total apt title to this euroboot which seems to be a pile up of rehearsals from 1988 which makes it about the time 'dead' joined up to do the throat roaring...this is mainly instros buried under storms of tape hiss giving the required necro sound these metal heads were ceaselessly looking for...deep within the basement these cats are found working on a thunderous couple of riffs which became their signature tunes, feedbacking and pummelling them into the dank dark ground, relentlessly looking for the true explosive moment when it all comes together in one cataclymic eruption of rocking swill...turning the dank air into a fetid soup they wade through endless slop hammering the ultimate riff into the shape that will satisfy the endless night they inhabit...layabouts might want to dig track 5 which is a drum solo but the first half has just the right amount of sonic screach that it sounds like prime era ESP-Disk free jazz...indeed the whole of the mayhem original aesthetic was similar to NYC jazzbos in the alientating the audience enough to build a more sympathetic one which would hopefully view and understand life and art differently from the earlier onlookers, certainly the 60s jazzers got enough square hatred (downbeat mag for one) thrown their way to know they were on the right track as now 4 decades down the road they are revered like no other jazzbos in the last half century...roundabout half way through the thing seems to take on a psychedelic trance vibe with the tape hiss getting louder for awhile as if acting as a buffer to keep the listener from drifting too far into the second mind which by now will have woken in most cats who get that far into the oooze...even the fact that this is over a mindbending hour long it would be too short at twice the length...somewhere in time and dimension this is the soundtrack to life, which must open up other, more far reaching vistas of (un)reality...

...layabouts familiar with the way underground metal has spread through the years from blue cheer to blue oyster cult to german oak to venom will know that these two bands represented on this exploito wax are the cornerstones of modern metal (though in no way should that be held against them)...comprised of a couple of demos from both morbid and mayhem the common factor being vocal interpreter dead...morbids death metal rattle shows up with a cool scuzzy acidrock guitar squeal to give the listener that extra jolt (track one has great ballroom style mindfry string bending on top of the technical death flurries)...second track kicks off with a '60s style mood before the riffing takes over...all of morbids side has a 'real cool ride' vibe, that's really going for it (like early '70 hard rock/stooges punk metal just skimmed and floated off the wax into the room and buzzed cats into another reality somewhere between NOW and somewhere else brother, somewhere else)...mayhems side starts off in a thick slower soupy sludge and then cranks it up to give off a fast rocking vibe but darker than the morbid effort...the slower parts also have psychedelic ballroom screach but here the ballroom is someway underground in a physical sense as well as esoteric culture...there's a heavy bad drug feel to this that hadn't been really heard in rock'n'roll for many years, maybe since the germs rocked the L.A trends/hippys with their brand of slopfall/crash burn aesthetic...deads in really a zone of his own, upping the freaked out level from the earlier combo by a goodly distance...this disk is highly recommended to all who dig the noise and vibe of edgar broughton/stackwaddy and the self belief of budgie/les rallizes all mixed in a scuzzy hazy otherworld of obsessed/paranoid bad dreams made manifest by beatnix from the frozen north (who thought venom were for real)...a very important historical document aswell as a great outpouring of wigged out spazz...

...taped at a couple of rehearsals during 1991, these are the last transmissions from mayhem featuring the throat ripping dead...incredibly messed-up necro sound that after a few spins starts to give up the vibes these nihilist beatnix wish to impart...its the sound of breaking free from the unremitting consumer death machine that wishes to make 'happy' complient surfs of the great unwashed...it's the sound of breaking on through to the other side where the oppressive dominant kkkulture no longer holds any power...its the sound of long winter nights beneath the frozen moon that give cats plenty of time to wonder the endless possibilties that come from ancient forests of earlier tymes where dimensions and multiple magic realities co-exist for the benefit of the stoned groover...perfect accompaniment to bonged evenings high in dusty garretts where the outside world does not enter for fear of being exposed as the plastic xeroxed fake it surely is...
