...being a bolting together of genes first LP after leaving the byrds and a few droppings from his tenure with that mighty fine combo...his first steps with a solo venture (with the gosdin brothers getting full billing) was recorded during 1966 and mirrors plus anticipates his former aviator compadres wax from 5D up to sweetheart proving gene had his finger on thepulse of the sixties more than he's given credit for...everything from early psych guitar lines and feel to country moves are present and comes complete with a couple of fab4 licks and some revolver style artpop showing he weren't afraid of the british invasion but reversely welcomed the chance to join the mersey take on rock'n'roll, with its advanced stylist quirks and general forward thinking attitudes...a real boss sound from the years when structure and senses melted and melded making anything possible, both real as well as imagined...
...although a lot of squares gave this the thumbs down at the time of release (the back cover picture of clark looking all glam gave a few country rockers some thoughts of trans gender weirdness but it's just drugs working their mystic voodoo)...this is probably genes most ambitious endeavour and certainly the best solo wax from any byrd, though the competition never really amounted to much when it came down to working individually...helped by more coke than possibly needed these arrangements take a few spins to work their magic, but the magic is certainly there and cats in an open frame of mind are going dig this...freshen up the bong and get ready for some cosmic vibrations from this downhome groover...
...when the cros puts his mind to it he can surely come up with some deceptively simple yet astounding work as evidenced by his tunes with the byrds and never more so than this his first and best solo work...solo in the early seventies laurel canyon environment of course meant there was at least ten or more guests all adding their few cents but that makes no never mind with this, it's davids visions, the others only embellish what's already there...a spaced out otherworldness pervades the whole thing with these solid stoned grooves meandering and weaving their way into the ether and beyond...when it comes to the west coast rock fraternity this is right at the top of the unsteady pile...(remastered for greater consideration)...
