honey ltd / eve

...a little known LP that came and went on the LHI label out of hollywood in 1968, so small was the stock copy it may not have actually been properly released to joe public...its real punchy studio produced off kilter sunshine pop, a disturbed lounge groove, but the lyrics are the thing to check with this biscuit...anti vietnam and drug comedowns are whats going on and that aint too usual with this kind of gear...cats digging the mamas'n'papas when they were messed up and falling apart will get a strong buzz off the grooves...mainly self penned (with a great version of louie louie) and compliments other efforts that could be deemed similar such as the feminine complex from nashville who were getting their one and only disk ready roundabout the same time...a mighty fine sound and extremely worthwhile and thats a fact...

...when honey ltd called it a day sometime in '69 a few months went by as they individually looked around the hollywood scene to get the vibes, to pick up on the groove and maybe grab a piece of the latest trend, the laurel canyon laid back and funky style which was grabbing imaginations and mood of the times...again there's a nice amalgam of vibes from carole-king-style-tapestry-mellow-R&B to gospel in a delaney&bonnie downhome-hollywood reefer haze...country-soul rocking lounge moves suit the studio musos attitude to doing the session, but if they'd had some younger cats laying down a groove this would have been a stoned buzz (maybe the LA GETAWAY cats, joel scott-hill/johnny babata/chris ethridge would be cool)...like with the honey ltd wax there's more going on here than just the tunes, theres a mixing of generational styles, but they could not push it to the younger set who were digging joni/CSNY/ronstadt, plus others who're too lame to mention(remember)...the cover with its handmade look was certainly in vogue with the denim-funky-cheesecloth ideas but seems somehow already out of date, it looked like they were faking it but in many ways they were a precursor to the coming decade when the record company squares discovered cocaine and tried to peddle M.O.R as hip and vital sounds, though that ain't no reflection on this wax...again on the LHI imprint and its fate was sealed from day one, it sank without a trace, not even getting as far as the bargain bin, this wax just didn't like to travel past the sunset strip...
