...suffering quite badly from the fact they arrived early on the scene as some yanquee answer to the fab4 they never shook off being some kind of teenybop combo...when it came to getting with the new music that was happening in '66/67 they weren't taken seriously by the underground and their original fans had moved on to other concerns...this disk was hyped as a concept, no doubt getting that idea from pepper, it's a cool orchestrated folky psych biscuit that needs a few spins and works a real boffo treat on the headphones...
...beau brummels, frisco hippy folkies record deep inside enemy territory, nashville, home of reactionary forces, beer drinking squares who weren't known for being receptive to new ideas, especially ideas concerning freedom, musical and otherwise...this fits in snuggly with other left of centre folk grooves with outward looking artiness like the stone ponies/hearts and flowers and to a lesser degree hep cats like van dyke parks, certainly not the sort of biscuit that would necessarily get the green light down nashville way but there in '68 the brummels plied their mystical hippy magic to come up with this otherworldly vibe that certainly ain't got too much to do with country rock that this often gets called, country influences are present but not in any heavy cowboy/good old boy sense, this is a tripped out art splurge, weaving patterns in eternity...
