monkees

...due to the tiring schedule the combo were putting in with the TV show, the non stop rounds of publicity the cats were forced to do to keep the aforementioned TV show in front of the teen consciousness the fifth biscuit from the pre-fab4 does have a couple of whack tunes that really should have been clipped at the quality control phase but such things didn't really matter to the all mighty bean counters at the record co. when the all consuming need to grab bread was upmost of importance...having said that there is some nice psych pop and a bit of hep freaky excursion to counter balance any yawns that might crop up, though any and all monkee aficionados know the ancient art of article preferred listening...all the rock snobs and normal media squares were still getting on their case with unqualified tattle about the group not playing on the disks, as if they were the only ones in the pop stratosphere 'guilty' of such a heinous crime, it's surprising the platter's any good at all...that kind of supercilious jive can ware a cat right down and no mistake...

...whether be the case a cats seen the flick or not it really makes no nevermind because this chipper soundtrack makes for good listening on its own and works as some kind of avant-collage acidhead thing-a-ma-jig...when it's put up along side so called serious acid rock, potent pysch slabs of the first order it stands above most and that ain't no fancy airhead blabber, no ironic statement based on nothing more than alarmingly monstrous fabrication, these monkee cats and their chums get plenty mileage from letting their imagination run free, darting hither and thither with ideas of liquid continuence...some nifty tunes, all top class extensions of what originally made the group such a buzzing hit with open minds, minds ready to receive something new, to get in the wind with freeform nonsense (the fact that most minds were teeny minds don't matter in the least as rock snobs and pretentious hippy swill wished they could express themselves with such sneaky hip grooves that came out of the idiot box when the show was airing back in the day)...soundbites pop up and there's copious extra grist added to prolong the trip...an extremely nice artifact from when freshness abounded on sunny days...

...first of the trio slices and another goodly batch of grist that if the name had been new a few rock 'aficionados' would have given it more houseroom, but times were a'changing fast in '68, and more than a few cats had some pressing urgent things crushing on their noodle at that juncture such as avoiding unpleasant vibes in the nam keeping the war machine going...the title is more than apt as a lot of this biscuit is made up of tracks plundered from sessions up to three years old and given a bit of a dusting and polish to make them fresher...the usual late band fare is here-2-hear; rockbubblepop/pyschbubble/country papa nes style/davy crooning and cats should pay some special attention to track12, whats going on with this vibed-out-zone- drone...also dig the cover, a nice lift from the old warhola wigster himself ...7 bonus cuts add more goodlyness...

...giving the cover a peep and its real evident that the suits at record co. central now (late 69) had little faith in the once mighty cash cow that was doing such good business over in the fantasyland known as monkeeville...that drawing is whack-a-doodle and that can't be denied, also putting their names on was real bizarro-world, as if the kids needed to be reminded, would the teens forget so soon (probably, but that ain't the question really), the bean counters couldn't take the risk so the names had to be shown...as always with artist versus commerce its the leaches at the company that need to be reminded who paid their unearned bonus the last couple of years and thats the straight up truth, ain't no mistake jake...anyhow the grist on the wax is more than spiffing with the band getting down with some adventurous pop, with every stripe being toted; country, off kilter showbiz, psych-crooning and some sneaky hip lyrics coming through the backdoor abound...last LP with mike and extra yardage added with some cool bonus tracks make this more than groovy and way better than some supercilious taste makers put forth...this is real sweet so give the ears a treat...

...well this biscuit marked the end of the line for shenanigans in monkeedom for a few years until they picked up in the retro market and took off for immortality...one look at the cover just about says it all, they've not quite got their backs to each other, but good as, it's only a matter of degree, literally, still any cats out there who know that these two were at the very least the heart and soul of the band are going to dig this wax which at the time of release was obviously ignored by rock critics and certainly hippys and the dwindling pool of fans let it slide aswell while moving on to other concerns as the new decade slowly got underway...released in early 1970 it holds up well against the pop competition, the likes of the andys, tommys, bubblegums and other yankee turn of decade hit paraders...some r'n'b rockers from mickey and some jovial crooning from davy and a touch of sunshine pop make this a fine listen...take away the name and this would certainly be looked upon with totally different and more positive eyes...
